I read with interest your article about Mike Myatt's retirement.   If you don't know Mike, you've missed a treat.  He was a dedicated member of the Town Staff.  He worked very well with the public and everyone.

I had the opportunity to work with Mike on a number of projects.  He has so many good traits, but here are a few:

  • He is a good listener.  He hears people out.

  • If he says he will call you, he does.

  • He is not a pushover.  He is fair and well reasoned in his opinions.  Don't mistake that for an easy touch for something that is not good for the Town.

  • If you discuss something with Mike, you never get a maybe.  He will say yes or no.  Unlike many in any occupation, maybe is not in his vocabulary.  He will say he will think about it, but that's not a maybe because he will get back with a clear yes or no.

  • He does not string long sentences together with a comma and a but.... He comes right out with what he thinks, when he has studied it enough to know the facts.

  • He handles public meetings like a diplomat.

  • He works from a plan.  The trail system is an example of this.  He and the Town have done wonders with it.

If you work with volunteers and he did that exceptionally well, you learn over time that they don't like maybe.  No is fine, you can get on about your business.  Of course if you are passionate about it, then yes is better.  Mike always gave it to you straight.  A no from him was better than a 100  maybes.
