Yesterday (Dec. 15) was the third snow day in a row for many students in the Kincardine area as schools were open but no buses were running due to the high wind, snow squalls, and continued closure of Highway 21 in Kincardine. Highway 9 from Kincardine to Walkerton was opened by Wednesday morning, as was the B-line (Bruce Road 23) which is used by many Bruce Nuclear workers to reach the plant. Bruce Road 86 from Lucknow to Highway 21, Bruce Road 6 from Ripley to Highway 21, and Bruce Road 20 from Bruce Road 1 to Bruce Road 33 were finally opened late Wednesday. However, Highway 21 remained closed from Port Elgin to Grand Bend and is not expected to open until sometime today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday). Environment Canada continued to issue a snow squall warning into last night. The Kincardine council meeting, slated for Wednesday night, was cancelled and has been re-scheduled to Monday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. The Huron-Kinloss municipal office was closed and its inaugural meeting has yet to be re-scheduled from Monday night when it was cancelled for the second time in a row. The high wind created rolling waves along Lake Huron at the Kincardine Harbour where ice has formed on the north and south pier. It was quite a sight to see waves smashing into the piers and along the breakwall. Chunks of ice can be seen floating along the channel into the harbour, pushed by the fierce waves from the lake. And the sun breaking through the clouds and shining on the Kincardine Lighthouse was a bright spot in an otherwise wintry day.
