After two attempts to hold its inaugural meeting, the new Huron-Kinloss council finally met for the first time Monday night (Dec. 20).

The inaugural meeting was originally scheduled for Dec. 6, but was postponed due to stormy weather. A second attempt on Dec. 13 was also cancelled because of closed roads and bad weather.

Mayor Mitch Twolan had already been sworn in on Dec. 7 so township business could proceed.

Dec. 20, clerk Sonya Watson conducted the swearing-in ceremony for deputy mayor Wilfred Gamble, and councillors Lillian Abbott, Jim Hanna, Don Murray and Carl Sloetjes. Jeff Elliott was sworn in Dec. 2 because he would not be at the meeting. Sloetjes is the only new member of council.

With the pomp and circumstance out of the way, council got right down to business, dealing with the general committee agenda first, followed by the council agenda. The general committee meeting had also been postponed twice.

In council session, the only major item was a delegation from the Lucknow Community Centre Board, with concerns about drainage and the water supply for that building.

The board had to redo the drainage for the community centre through a joint drain, and was seeking financial assistance from nearby resident Brian Johnson who also benefits from the new drainage. However, Johnson is not favourable to that idea.

Meanwhile, the community centre gets its water service through Johnson so there is concern that this service could be in jeopardy.

Council agreed to have staff investigate setting up a water supply from the Lucknow Sports Centre to the community centre. That would also require an easement across Johnson's property.
