Do you remember Christmas pageants of old, when mothers would devise shepherds costumes from kimonos, towels and ropes and angel wings from cardboard and tinsel? Those of us who can remember such Sunday School pageants are now pretty long in the tooth. People seem to have lost touch with the simplicity and beauty of the Bible Story of Jesus’ birth. Many children have never even heard of the virgin birth, the guiding star, precious gifts of kings from the East and choruses of angels announcing the birth to shepherds watching their flocks by night. Santa Claus has completely usurped the Christ Child in many a household. Why not try to do something entirely different this year? What you believe or do not believe, pick up a Bible and read the Christmas story to your children. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain, for children have a knack for discerning the truth. I also appeal to the churches in this area to lose the high-tech, modern re-telling of the Birth of Christ and come back, whether this year or next, to the old-style pageants in telling the Christmas story. Remember, it was Jesus, Himself, who said that those who enter the Kingdom of God must do so as little children. Merry Christmas, everyone! Now, go worship Jesus, the reason for the season, and have the best day ever!
