A letter from the Beach Association presidents has prompted Huron-Kinloss Township to change its policy regarding algae clean-up at Lurgan, Bruce, Point Clark and Boiler beaches.

At the Dec. 20 general committee meeting, facilities and recreation director Mike Fair said that the presidents of the Beach Associations Bruce Beach, Point Clark and Lurgan Beach/Blair's Grove want the clean-up to be done at regular intervals without phone calls or algae measurement.

The current township policy calls for monitoring of the beaches for algae during July and August, said Fair. Otherwise, monitoring is sporadic - when staff is in the area - and the measurements are estimated to ensure they satisfy the policy requirements.

"Over the past few years, the algae produced is very erratic - from high amounts in 2008, to very little in 2009, and average in 2010," said Fair. "My concern is that we would book the algae harvester weekly, bi-monthly or monthly, and there would be no algae accumulated. On the other hand, there may be no algae for all of June and July, and extensive algae in August."

The Beach Association presidents were asking that the algae clean-up start in May after the long weekend and continue on a regular basis, without phone calls or algae measurement, until the end of the Labour Day weekend.

"We believe that by regular algae clean-ups, our membership will begin to feel that a more equitable allocation of the tax dollars would be spent along the beach," states the letter.

Fair recommended that the township amend the policy to have monitoring of algae and required clean-up done from four days before the Victoria Day weekend until the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend.

Council agreed with that recommendation.
