After years of taking photos of other cars in the ditch, the lens was on the other foot, so to speak, as the Dadson family watched the Huron Auto Wreckers tow truck pull my Kincardine Times car out of the ditch on Hayes Lake Avenue in Huron-Kinloss Township, Wednesday afternoon. To my credit, I was not at the wheel at the time. Our eldest was driving, with David riding shotgun, and I was ensconced in the back seat, happily drinking a Tim Hortons English Toffee cappuccino. We were on the way to drop our youngest at a friend's house in Kinlough. Of course, the fastest way is to head east on the 12th of Huron which turns into Hayes Lake Avenue, and takes you directly into Kinlough. However, once you reach Hayes Lake Avenue, the roadway turns into gravel and there are three "S" bends along there that, obviously, are quite slippery when covered with snow. As we reached the third curve, the car hit a patch of ice and started sliding. Our eldest and my husband attempted to correct the skid, but the car went out of control, slid completely around, and came to rest facing west with the back bumper firmly embedded in the snowbank on the south side of the road. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but I ended up wearing whatever was left of my cappuccino. We tried digging out the car, but could not push it off the snowbank. So, we called CAA, and Huron Auto Wreckers came out and pulled us out of the ditch. The irony of all this: we dropped off our youngest, and went on to Walkerton where our eldest passed her G2 driving test with flying colours. Ah, life in the fast lane!
