Huron-Kinloss has had an excellent construction year, with more than 200 permits issued, and the highest construction value ever, at $27.1 million. That's the word from chief building official Matt Farrell who gave his 2010 year-end report at the general committee meeting Tuesday morning (Jan. 11). "It was a surprisingly strong year," said Farrell. "There were 205 permits issued which is an increase of 44 from the previous year. The overall construction value was $27,181,650, up $8.7 million from 2009. The average permit value was $132,593." There were 61 new homes built in 2010, compared to 51 in 2009, and 40 in 2008. The average value was $268,065, said Farrell, which is comparable to $266,647 the previous year. Four new large barns were constructed, he said, as well as several additions that required Nutrient Management Plans under the Nutrient Management Act. "The commercial/industrial/institutional area was strong in 2010," said Farrell. "It was up considerably from 2009. He noted that Inverlyn Estates, just south of Kincardine, had 12 new homes built, with more to come this year. Heritage Heights Phase 4, also just south of Kincardine, had eight new homes built and should see more constructed in 2011.

A
major boost to December's figures was a permit for the $3-million renovation at the
Pine River Cheese factory on Highway 21, said Farrell. There was just one permit issued for a new home, with a construction
value of $280,000. "Residential construction remains
strong and will continue so in 2011," Farrell said, noting that while
the township has surpassed the construction value figure, it has not
had the highest number of permits. The best year was still 1995. Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
