Councilor Diane Huber wore another hat at Saugeen Shores Town Council meeting on Monday, as she represented the local Propeller Club and, with Dave Wenn, of the Marine Heritage Society, presented a proposal for a Marine Heritage Festival.

The festival to be held in August of this year, will be a two-day celebration to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the completion of the Chantry Island Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters restoration.

August 11, 2001 was also the official launch of the Chantry Island tours aboard the boat the Peerless.  Since it's inception, the tours have taken thousands of visitors from around the world to the island.  This year, in conjunction with the festival, the Propeller Club and Marine Heritage Society, will also welcome a  new boat, the Peerless II.

Plans for the 1st annual Festival include partnering with various service clubs and groups along with the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, widespread entertainment, a marine theme throughout the area, activities at the Southampton Harbour, Pioneer Park, Coliseum and Fairy Lake, among others.

It is also anticipated that promotions, such as heritage recognition of early homes, fish dinners, fostering marine woodworking and art, and resurrecting heritage names, such as Scubby's Point, will not only expand the marine cultural history of the area but will also bring considerable economic spin-offs to the region through tourism.
