Twenty-one girls had a chance to learn the science behind first aid, including Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) during the Girls In Real Life Science (GIRLS) Club workshop Friday morning at the Bruce Power Visitors' Centre. Organized by Women in Nuclear (WiN) Bruce, the club is open to girls in Grades 4-7. Most came from the Port Elgin and Kincardine area, plus one girl from East Wawanosh. First aid instructor Megan Fair outlined what should be in a first aid kit for the home and for the car. In the home, a proper kit would include a first aid manual, sterile gauze pads of different sizes, adhesive tape, adhesive bandages in several sizes, elastic bandage, a splint, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment (Polysporin), antiseptic solution (such as hydrogen peroxide), hydrocortisone cream (one per cent, anti-itch), acetaminophen, tweezers, sharp scissors, safety pins, disposable instant cold packs, calamine lotion, alcohol wipes, thermometer, plastic non-latex gloves (at least two pairs), flashlight and extra batteries, mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained at the local Red Cross), list of emergency phone numbers, blanket (stored nearby). A vehicle roadside emergency kit should contain an SOS sign, candle in a deep can, matches, whistle, fire extinguisher, seat belt cutter, small shovel, warning lights or road flares, instant heat packs, and extra clothing, as well as the first aid kit items.

Fair demonstrated CPR and the AED unit and then had the girls work in teams to try it themselves. In groups, they then went through a rotation at first aid stations showing how to dress a bleed, apply a sling, splint a fracture, and use the public access defibrillator. The next GIRLS Club event will be held during March Break. ![]() Jordy Surridge of Kincardine checks for breathing on "Tom," the CPR device ![]() Instructor Megan Fair demonstrates CPR Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area.
