January has been marked as Crime Stoppers month and the agency has lots to celebrate.

Crime Stoppers US began in the 1970s and it is hitting a milestone with more than $20-billion in drugs and property recovered during arrests world-wide, through tips from the public.

There are 1,200 local programs in 20 countries around the world and Grey-Bruce’s program has been running since 1987.

The Grey-Bruce program has seized more than $46 million in drugs and stolen goods.

Police co-ordinator for Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers, Constable Dean Rutherford, says that with January celebrated as Crime Stoppers month, the organization wants to raise awareness about the program and how it works.

Crime Stoppers doesn’t receive any government funding and it is made up of volunteers in the community. Crime Stoppers is available by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The program works through anonymous tips left by people who know something about a crime that has been committed. They don't have to leave their names or testify in court. And they could receive a reward if their tip pays off.
