It's a new year and we all make New Year's Resolutions.

The most common one is to lose weight - until, of course, the next meal, and then that resolution is off the table, so to speak.

Well, not for two employees at Bean's Bistro in downtown Kincardine.

Paul Dennis and Olivia Hinchburger have a friendly rivalry going on, "The Battle of the Bulge," to see who can lose the most weight by March 10.

Using Bean's Bistro's healthy lunch menu to help them out, each has a goal of losing 20 pounds.

The "battle" began Jan. 3 and by the following Monday, Paul had lost two pounds but gained them back and Olivia had gained two pounds.

By Monday, Jan. 17, they had each lost two pounds and kept them off.

Keep tabs on how the "battle" continues by checking the Kincardine Times, or drop in at Bean's Bistro to see how these two are doing and to offer encouragement.

Paul wants to drop a few pounds because he is going to Belize, north of Guatemala, on a mission trip, from April 9-20.

"I need to be in shape for that," he says. His nephew is a priest at the mission in Belize, and Paul will be working with a team out of Texas which can build three houses in a week, working with the local people.

"They're one-storey houses, built from a slab that is already poured," says Paul. "Once we have them completed, they are ready for occupation."

Olivia, 19, wants to lose weight in order to be healthier.
