The Canadian Coast Guard will begin ice-breaking operations in the Owen Sound Harbour on or about February 7, 2011.

The purpose of this annual operation is to escort a commercial ship into the Owen Sound harbour.

According to the Coast Guard, pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers should get off the ice as soon as possible when they see a vessel or ice-breaker in the area.

The ice may move and this can create a real danger for anyone in the area.  In addition, the tracks and other resulting open-water areas may remain open and unstable for a significant length of time after the passage of the ships.
