Kincardine had sharp increase
in construction last year

Kincardine had a tremendous construction year in 2010.

The final figures show a total of 269 building permits issued, for a construction value of $27.28-million.

That's up sharply from 2009 when the municipality had 253 permits issued, with a construction value of $19.12-million.

Chief building official Michele Barr had her final report prepared for the Feb. 2 meeting which was cancelled due to the snowstorm. The report will be part of the Feb. 9 council meeting, listed under the consent agenda.

In that report, Barr outlines the successful year for building in Kincardine, noting there were permits issued for 51 houses.

By comparison, Saugeen Shores had double that many new homes, at 102 permits, and a total construction value for 2010 of $48.92-million. Huron-Kinloss had 61 permits for new homes, and a total construction value for last year of $27.18-million. Brockton had 15 new homes, and a total construction value in 2010 of $35.18-million.

Barr's report also indicated the planning status of several developments started in 2010, including the following:

  • 21 Russell St. (south of Sobeys) - in pre-meetings
  • Auto Spa on Millennium Way - application submitted
  • Connaught Park Washrooms - building in progress
  • Holiday Inn Express and Suites - completed
  • Davidson Centre addition (seniors' centre) - completed
  • Davidson Centre addition (gymnasium) - building in progress
  • Kerr-Walsh - completed
  • McKay in Tiverton - building in progress
  • Municipality of Kincardine - airport hangar - completed
  • Schropp - Lorne Creek Estates - meeting conditions in site plan
  • U-Store-It - meeting conditions of site plan
  • Women's House - completed

A status report of the planning for subdivision/multi-plex developments that were begun last year includes the following:

  • Beisel Contracting, Main St., Tiverton (five single, 17 row units) - meeting conditions and site plans
  • Brigadoon, Saratoga Road, east of Highway 21 - in pre-meetings
  • Brown, Bruce Avenue, west of Highway 21 (multi-unit and commercial) - pre-meetings
  • Campbell Avenue at Russell Street (seven single units and one apartment building) - planning application submitted
  • Hunter's Ridge, south of Hunter Street (29 single units, 80% built on) - completed
  • Lakefield Phase 1, at Penetangore Row and Saratoga Road (38 single units, 50% built on) - completed

In addition, Barr's report points to the work done in the fight against termites in the municipality last year.

In the former Town of Kincardine, 571 houses were inspected - 46 per cent of the 1,234 houses on the termite zone maps.

Of those, five houses had termites. Six homeowners refused an inspection. There were 207 call-backs, and 698 notices left (no call-back).

In the Lorne Beach area, 57 houses were inspected - 54 per cent of the 106 on the zone map. Of those, 14 houses had termites, two refused an inspection, there were 28 call-backs, and 53 notices left.
