The Honourable Carol Mitchell, MPP
for Huron-Bruce, today applauded the province’s announcement that no
offshore wind projects will be located in Lake Huron as Ontario is not
proceeding with proposed offshore wind projects while further scientific
research is conducted.
No Renewable Energy Approvals have been issued for offshore wind projects and no projects will proceed at this time, including any under consideration for Lake Huron. Applications for offshore wind projects in the Feed-In-Tariff program will no longer be accepted and current applications will be suspended. Offshore wind on freshwater lakes is a new concept and there are no projects currently operating in North America. The recently installed Lake Vänern project in Sweden is currently the only operational freshwater offshore project in the world. Ontario will work with neighbouring US states to develop policies that ensure any future proposed projects protect the environment on both sides of the Great Lakes. The McGuinty Government is firmly committed to building Ontario’s clean energy economy as part of the Open Ontario Plan, which is creating jobs in communities across Ontario. It is also a key part of how the government is moving Ontario off-coal fired generation and onto cleaner sources of power. “We listened to the concerns from our communities loud and clear and our government is taking the responsible and necessary steps to protect the environment, while ensuring there is enough clean energy to keep the province working,” said Mitchell. Ontario has already attracted more than $16 billion in private sector investment in the Green Energy sector, and over 20 companies have announced plans to set up or expand operations in Ontario. The province is turning off 'dirty' coal-fired generation and replacing that power with cleaner energy sources. Coal-fired electricity generation in Ontario will end in 2014. |
