According to Jim Bell, Chief Building Official for the Town of Saugeen Shores, building activity is expected to remain strong for 2011 in Saugeen Shores.

"We had a record year in 2008, then it tapered off in 2009 to a still-strong $33 million," said Bell at the recent budget talks. "Then, it [building] jumped again in 2010 to $50 million with 110 single-family residential buildings and 55 multi-residential builds."

Bell told Council that 2011 housing appears to be on the upswing once again in Saugeen Shores, along with some commercial building.

"We are actually ahead of many surrounding municipalities," Bell said. "In 2010, Kincardine was at $22 million with 50 residential builds and Owen Sound was at $71 million, but of that, two were large commercial projects for $50 million so they only had $21 million with 12 residential."

An overall building department $60,000 surplus in 2010 is being placed in the newly created 'Building Reserve'.  "We want to have a cushion in the event we do have a bad year down the road," Bell explained, "but overall it's looking good for Saugeen Shores."
