Dear Editor:
Thank you for your complete coverage of our testimony before the Senate
yesterday.
I thought I might give you a few impressions of our brief trip to
Ottawa.
-
We all expect to have tight security at airports.
A further legacy of 9/11 is the very tight security in Canada's
government buildings. The professional staff was polite and
thorough in their job of guarding the seat of democracy in Canada.
-
Travel to big cities, sometimes requires taking a
taxi. We found a gem in Ottawa. He was from Lebanon and
he knew everything about the city. All its secrets were
pointed out to us. Buildings, statues, how the
city is maintained rolled off his tongue. He was very proud of
'his' city.and no tour guide could hold a candle to him. Red
lights did not seem to faze him either. He ignored them to
concentrate on our guided tour. Taxi drivers are always
a treasure, if you can get them talking.
-
The Senate staff was caring and professional.
They have a wonderful place to work and are very proud of it.
They seem happy.
-
The Senators to a person were in tune with the
importance of Lighthouses. One Senator said: "They are
here with us now. They will never be created again. We
need to preserve them for the future."
-
The emotion that the Senators showed, made us all
feel good. They know it's important. They are groping
for a solution. Two of the Senators suggested a long term
national trust for Lighthouses. The idea would be to have
funds donated that would be managed Canada wide and the best and
most economic means brought to the fore to preserve as as many as
possible in cooperation with dedicated volunteers and communities.
It's a good idea. Maybe we can help.
-
Mike Fair and Vicki Tomori impressed the Senators
with their zeal and preparation.
We were all proud to represent Chantry Island, Point
Clark and the Bruce Coast Lighthouse Partners.
