The South-Port Optimist Club of Saugeen Shores continues to grow as it welcomed four new members on Wednesday (Feb. 9), Karen and Bob Lauer and Verna and Steve Webb. The Club, which is in approximately 35 countries, focuses its efforts on initiatives related primarily to youth and children with its vision of "Bringing Out the Best in Kids". There are over 20,000 volunteers in the Canadian organization and the South-Port Club, with 29 members, is celebrating 37 years of service.
Past-president, Jim Lavery was presented with a special pin by President, Brenda Zinn Each club is autonomous and run by members in their own communities so that they have unique flexibility in meeting the needs of the youth of their area in any way they see fit. Among the local activities that the group participates in is sponsoring 'A Night at the Museum', contributing to the Accessible Playground, sponsor of the Breakers Swim Team, Saugeen Track & Field Club and the Pee-Wee and Bantam minor hockey teams. Among the group's initiatives are the HOBY (Hugh O'Brien) leadership program that helps children develop oratorical skills, the DARE Grade 5 drug awareness program through the local p9olice service and the Grade 8 Graduation Citizenship award. |
The group raises funds throughout the year with BBQs, providing parking during Pumpkinfest and its major fund-raiser the weekly Thursday night bingo held at the Southampton Town Hall. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room of Independent Grocers in Port Elgin and new members are always welcome.
