Young professionals from Kitchener-Waterloo enjoy a winter holiday at MacGregor Point on Lake Huron

It always seems as though people don't realize what they have in their own backyard.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park, located immediately south of Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores on Lake Huron, is often thought of as a summer vacation destination when, in fact, it is open throughout the year.

Skiers enjoy the winter silence

With cross-country ski trails and an outdoor skating oval within the trees of the park, it has also become a winter holiday destination.

Over the Valentine's weekend (Feb. 12 - 13), groups from outside the area took advantage of peak winter conditions to enjoy the park activities.

Visitors from Kitchener-Waterloo enjoy skating in the trees

A group of young professionals from Kitchener-Waterloo decided to visit the park, staying overnight in the 'yurts' and skating the oval during the day.   'Randy', a serious cyclist who had bicycled the park during the summer, was instrumental in getting the group to visit during the winter.

'Randy' brought his friends on a winter outdoor vacation

"It's amazing," he said.  "The yurts are wonderful to stay in and this [park skating] is phenomenal."

The word yurt is originally from a Turkish word that today refers to a tent-like building  and the yurts in MacGregor Park are cozy tent structure with raised wooden floors, sets of bunk-beds and BBQs.  Open year-round for short stays, the yurts have become extremely popular during the winter for the 'outdoor experience' of winter camping.

A fun time for three friends
