Fifteen take part in Kincardine Legion public-speaking contest

junior

The junior public speakers (Grades 4-6), include Brontae Hunter (L), first; Rylee Evans, second; Kendrick Shepherd, third; Eila Barger, fourth; Amelia Arciszewski, fifth; and Sarah Keown, sixth

intermediate

The intermediate public speakers are Marc Glipo (L), first; Michelle Hack, second; Delaney Evans, third; and Jacob Gordon, fourth

Fifteen students, from Grades 1-8, took to the stage at the Kincardine Legion in the the annual public-speaking contest.

Five participants competed in storytelling at the primary level (Grades 1-3), with the following results:

  • 1st - Devony House of St. Anthony's School, "J'aime la Neige"
  • 2nd - Maya Hunter of St. Anthony's, "Ourson pour Simon"
  • 3rd - Jordan Beisel of Elgin Market Public School, "Down the Drain"
  • 4th - Lauren Lee of St. Anthony's, "Un Nid Pour Dix"
  • 5th - Scotlyn Murray of Elgin Market, "Up, Up, Down"

There were six contestants in the junior division (Grades 4-6), with the following results:

  • 1st - Brontae Hunter of St. Anthony's, "Reducing the Voting Age to 16"
  • 2nd - Rylee Evans of Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School (KTTPS), "Dreams"
  • 3rd - Kendrick Shepherd of St. Anthony's, "Harry Potter"
  • 4th - Eila Barger of St. Anthony's, "What I Want To Be When I Grow Up"
  • 5th - Amelia Arciszewski of St. Anthony's, "ce que tu ne peux pax faire"
  • 6th - Sarah Keown of St. Anthony's, "Colorectal Cancer"

Four students competed in the intermediate division (Grades 7-9) with the following results:

  • 1st - Marc Glipo of St. Anthony's, "Persistence"
  • 2nd - Michelle Hack of St. Anthony's, "Child Labour"
  • 3rd - Delaney Evans of KTTPS, "April Fool's Day"
  • 4th - Jacob Gordon of St. Anthony's, "Les Problems et les Causes de l'obesite"

The speakers received certificates of recognition from Legion president Red Larsen, and youth and education co-ordinator Carole Robinson, who organizes the contest every year.She noted that this is her final year as youth and education co-ordinator and of being in charge of the public-speaking contest.

She thanked the judges, Lise Blais, Eva Wilken and Nancy Clark, timers Betty Fry and Erva Verheye, scruitineers Red Larsen and Dave Dyer, and all  who participated. She urged the Grade 8 students to come back next year and take part in the intermediate level, and all are invited to participate in the annual Remembrance Day poster and essay contest.

The first-place winners at this year's speaking contest, Devony House, Brontae Hunter and Marc Glipo, will represent the Kincardine Legion at the zone competition in Clinton on March 5.
