If the snowy, wintry weather is getting you down, then you need a couple of hours of delightful mayhem. And the Kincardine Theatre Guild has the perfect show for you, as the production of "Caught in the Net" opens tomorrow night (Feb. 11) at 8 p.m. at the Kincardine Arts Centre. Set in London, England, the play is a sequel to Ray Cooney's hilarious "Run For Your Wife" in which taxi driver John Smith tried to juggle two wives, with the help of his hapless sidekick, Stanley Gardner. Well, Stanley and John are back, but now Smith has a daughter with one wife, and a son with the other; the children are teenagers, they've discovered each other on the Internet, and now they want to meet in person. This is where the delightful mayhem begins. John Adams returns in the role of Stanley Gardner and, true to form, he is still the clueless lodger in the flat above the home where John Smith lives with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Vicki. His mission, as handed him by Smith, is to keep the headstrong Vicki from meeting Smith's son, Gavin, by wife, Barbara. Matt Harvey is the duplicitous Smith and plays the role to perfection. Not only does he have stellar comedic timing, but he delivers his lines in a cockney accent, and he can leap over furniture with grace and ease.
Matt Harvey (L) as John Smith tries to sort out the mess with the help of Stanley Gardner (John Adams) Harvey and Adams are superb, playing off each other, in this fast-paced farce. You would be wise to take a notebook and at least attempt to keep track of who's who at any given time. And you'll want to remain alert to see who vanishes into one door and then comes out the other. Joining Harvey and Adams on stage are Elaine Van Rooyen as Mary Smith. She is wonderful in this part, trying to make sense of what Stanley and John are telling her and getting confused quickly as poor Stanley fails miserably at subterfuge, spinning lie upon lie to keep Vicki from meeting Gavin. Filling out the cast are Linda Pagnotta as Barbara Smith, Sid Duggan as Stanley's father, newcomer Mercedes Battler as Vicki, and Aaron Lewis as Gavin. Jim Peddie deserves praise for not only his fine directing skills, but also his set design. It works perfectly. With several doors and the separate colours, it shows distinctly two households with the main action happening at centre stage. As with most great farcical comedies, the wild and crazy action builds to the point where nothing makes sense anymore and everyone looks at everyone else, trying to figure out what exactly is going on. So, what is really going on at the end? Well, you'll have to buy a ticket and find out. Suffice it to say, it's the twist of all twists. And, just when you think you have it all figured out, you don't. The play is one laugh after another, from beginning to end. One of the best lines in the whole show is said by Barbara Smith when referring to her husband: "Oh, John rushes in and out all the time. He's got enough energy for two people." The play runs Feb. 11-12 at 8 p.m., Feb. 13 at 2 p.m., and Feb. 17-19, 24-26, at 8 p.m., at the Kincardine Arts Centre in downtown Kincardine. Feb. 12 is the gala event, while Feb. 13's matinee is the performance which will be adjudicated by the Western Ontario Drama League. Tickets are $15 each, with reserved seating; available at Jerome Flowers and Gifts in downtown Kincardine or by calling 519-396-9000. The gala costs $5 extra.
