Kincardine District Secondary School is planning to host a two-day symposium in June, and MP Justin Trudeau, son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, is to be one of the keynote speakers. Entitled, "Today's Kids, Tomorrow's Village: Living and Parenting in the Light of New Research and Rapidly Changing Technology," the event is slated for June 9-10. The purpose of the symposium is to allow students the opportunity to become more aware of issues related to healthy, safe and positive choices associated with relationships, on-line activities, recreational activities, and media messages. The keynote addresses and workshops will be presented from the perspective that today's young adults are tomorrow's parents, leaders and community members, and they should have the knowledge and experiences that will allow them to make informed decisions. The organizing committee wants students to begin to think about the "village" that will be raising the next generation. Besides Trudeau, the keynote speakers are Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Grossman, Professor Jackson Katz, and "AR" (initials), a victim of cyber-harassment. The symposium will offer students a selection of workshops from which they can choose four. Tickets for the June 9 evening keynote address by Trudeau, will go on sale in April. At that time, symposium passes will also be offered for sale. These passes allow community members access to the daytime keynote addresses and select workshops. In order to invite keynote speakers with the expertise and charisma needed to relate to the students and school community, the organizing committee is seeking the support of its community partners. It is requesting donations from local businesses and groups to assist in off-setting the considerable expense. If you wish to donate to this event, contact KDSS at 519-396-9151 and ask for Kathie Hackney or Sheryl Elliott.
