Former Kincardine mayor and Citizen of the Year dies at age 87 |

Second World War veteran Herman Edwin Young of Trillium Court Seniors Community, Kincardine, died at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the age of 87. Beloved husband of the late Margaret Young (née Montgomery). Dear father of Steve (Michelle) Young of London and Scott (Krista) Young of Hanover. Sadly missed by his grandchildren, Sarah, Curtis and Jaydon. Predeceased by a son in infancy; brothers, Jim, Harold, Bill, Ken and Glen Young; and sisters, Myrtle Bowers and Evelyn Emmerton. Young was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, served as deputy and zone commander and was active on the provincial youth education program. He was a correspondent for the Legion Magazine and helped organize the first reunion of the HMCS Kincardine crew. In 1979, the 35th anniversary of Operation Overlord (the code name for the D-Day Invasion), he and best friend Jack Tufford joined a group of about a 100 and made a trek back to Beny-Sur-Mer. He and his wife were hard-working members of the Kincardine United Church. He was involved with baseball and hockey in Kincardine, was a volunteer with the Junior C Bulldogs hockey club, and helped organize the regional Seniors' Games. A member of Kincardine council, he became mayor and was later recognized as Kincardine's Citizen of the Year. He also received a medal from Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle for outstanding community service. Visitation will be held today (Feb. 23) from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, 757 Princes St., Kincardine, Ontario, N2Z 1Z5; 519-396-2701. The funeral service will be held at Kincardine United Church on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Don Harry officiating. Interment Kincardine Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Kincardine United Church would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. |
