ericEric Martin of Ripley has been named one of six recipients of the Holstein Canada Education Award.

The 20-year-old son of Dr. Alec and Sharon Martin is studying agriculture business at the University of Guelph.

In his third year of the four-year course, he applied for the Holstein Canada bursary last fall but heard there was a strong pool of candidates so he didn't think he would win.

"I found out in mid-December that I had won, but I wasn't able to tell anyone until the official press release came out earlier this month," says Martin. "I was pretty surprised. My family doesn't live on a farm like other farm kids."

Heavily involved in 4-H, Martin enjoys raising and showing dairy calves. He has worked for the past three summers as a crop scout for Cargill Ag Horizons in Harriston, helping growers develop their crops.

However, his career goals lean more toward the dairy industry even though it has high barriers to entry.

Martin says the $750 bursary will go toward university costs and showing calves through 4-H.

He has two brothers, Daniel and Grant, who are also involved in 4-H and raising and showing dairy calves.

The Holstein Canada Education Award is presented to two worthy recipients in each of Ontario and Quebec, as well as one in Western Canada and one in Atlantic Canada.

The award goes to a regular or junior member of Holstein Canada or a son or daughter of a member. The student must have completed one year of university or college and be returning to school.

Besides a good academic record, the award selection committee bases its decision on farm involvement and work experience, youth involvement and career choice.
