I too am a single mother. I work not 1, but 3 jobs to provide for my 2 children. I am their sole support. Not only do I have to bring home the bacon, but I have to slaughter the pig and cook it too. I do make more than then the writer, but my income is taxable, so comparable. We eat the discounted food from Independent and belong to the Good Food Box. I shop at the Salvation Army. My mode of transportation is my feet - which can take me shopping from one end of town to the other. There is not much I would not do for my children and if giving a government official their report cards would benefit us, I would not hesitate. There is a big difference between pride and dignity. You can swallow your pride and still maintain your dignity.

The other day my daughter had to write about who her hero was - and she picked me. I had no idea that all my efforts as a single parent were so visible to my children. I wish better for them and lead by example.

Good for you for not wanting to live off the system, but if you currently aren't working, there is nothing wrong with some help at any cost for your children's sake. But remember - the help you get is close to home. Supporting our local economy will eventually get you and your children into the work force.
