As Human Resource professional, Joanne Sutton, explained at a recent event put on by the Saugeen Business Enterprise Centre, today's workplace consists of four generations, each requiring a unique way of interaction and communication.
Approximately 40 Saugeen Shores business people attended the seminar held at the Southampton Town Hall on March 3rd to learn the best techniques of dealing with the multi-generational employees and customer market.
Joanne Sutton (L) and Business Enterprise Manager, Jill Roote Sutton explained the many ways of dealing with the different generations. "There is generation X, generation Y and the generations in between. Each is very different and each has to be handled in a unique way." When dealing with customers, business owners/personnel have to realize that ages of customers require a different communication. In addition, Sutton pointed out that retaining personnel today means being able to communicate to the different ages of employees. "Our parents and grandparents believed in loyalty to their employers," said Sutton. "Younger generations don't have that sense of loyalty and employers have to offer 'perks' to instill that same sense of loyalty." Overall, Sutton explained the many techniques that business owners today should understand when dealing with people from different generations.
