March 22nd is World Water Day, and to support this event Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) Student Senate is challenging all students, staff and trustees to “Go Blue-er-water” by standing up in support of conserving and protecting water.

For one whole day everyone in Bluewater is being challenged to go without showering, and reduce the amount of water used on a daily basis. Additionally, we want all students and staff to use a reusable water bottle and wear the colour blue in support of this initiative.

The Student Senate is hoping that this day will help to raise awareness of water issues around our world.

We need to appreciate this precious resource! “Billions of people go without safe, clean drinking water yet many of us waste large amounts of water,” says Braden Weltz, a Student Senator for Bluewater District School Board, “People often think of water as something that will last forever but in reality it is a finite resource that needs constant care and conservation. We often take it for granted.”

Jean Stephenson, Superintendent of Student Success, says, “Our Students are passionate about protecting the environment. When students suggest doing without their daily shower, … we know they are serious. We applaud their efforts. I, for one, will join them on March 22, 2011.”

According to the BWDSB Student Senate and information provided by the EarthCare Canada website:

  • A typical shower uses 160 litres of water.

These are the potential savings if we boycott showers on World Water Day, March 22, 2011:

  • Student senate: will save 1920 litres of Water

  • Student Senate, all Trustees and our System Administrative Team: will save 5,600 litres of water.

  • A typical Elementary School: will save 64,000 litres of water

  • A typical Secondary School will save 160,000 litres of water.

... and, IF ALL students and staff at BWDSB do not shower on March 22nd it would save 3,200,000 Litres of water. This could fill the equivalent of FORTY (40) backyard swimming pools!!

So PLEASE join us.

“Go Blue-er-water”! Wear Blue, don’t shower, and drink from a reusable water bottle.
