This survey was one of our most popular.  People are clearly all for trees being planted, even though it will take a long time

Here are some of the comments, but not all:

21 will always be closed due to high  winds and white outs until some trees  and vegetation is planted to slow down  drifting and winds. Ross Cress Point Clark

Absolutely. Our parents wisely used  snow fences and the cedars would be a  more permanent solution. Much as a  day off work is lovely at times  productivity lost due to road closure  must be astronomical.

Am surprised it took them this long to  ask such an obvious question! Anyone  living/driving along this route in the  winter knows this already!!!!

as a land owner along 21 there is no  reason that i would host a row of trees  that we would likely receive no  compensation for plus as they grow they  would be as unkempt as the rest of their  road allowance and block the view of the  lake which as we all know is a great  natural beauty.

But not cedars as they have a shallow  root and are very prone to wind damage.

Very necessary as soon as possible

Absolutely yes. It should have been  done years ago!!

only if they intend to  maintain them  water them regularly  whippersnip around them so that they  will grow properly

with todays focus on a green  environment it only makes sense

YES YES YES YES YES Speaking for myself who drives it each  day the BLine is no better the Highway  needs help it is closed more often than  it is OPEN Save a life plant a tree!

)as long as they know  what distance to plant them to make a  difference the trees off the ramp  going into town at Home Hardware make  it worse!!!

it would help with  visibility

It would impede alot of  wind that decreases visibilty along  that stretch and also catch the snow  behind the treeline

Should have been done years  ago. It is ridiculous how often the  highway is closed not to mention how  dangerous.

its about time the government took some  responsibility for safety of drivers in Bruce County .  Unless you have driven in a blinding snowstorm in  Bruce County you have know idea how bad it can be.

cost would be to high and cedars do  not do well at side of road due to  salt and exhaust ...

DEFINITELY  it should have been done  years ago! Need to plant decent sized  ones so they may be effective in the  next decade!

Highway 21 is fast becoming a May to  October road. Spend the money and get  the natural snow fence planted!! With  nothing but growth expected for this  area given the future of the Bruce  Nuclear plants we need to make sure  we keep some viable roadways in the  winter!

I have been a passenger in a car  accident along the Amberly curve on  Highway 21. This is a dangerous area  that all drivers continuously have to  risk travelling on.

I lean towards yes because I can  remember years ago when miles of snow  fence was used along hwy 21. However  it would still be closed when  necessary. So my answer is a reserved  yes. Also you must remember that a  year round snow barrier takes away  valuable farm land.

I would suggest larger trees than  Cedars...more like spruce trees

If it helps keep the roads safe and  open then lets do it. Perhaps the  insurance companys will decrease their  rates if there's less accidents. lol

if this proposed sysyem works go for it

It honestly believe it would be a  great way in the long run to save  money and help in the future with less  road closures.

It only makes sense. How many times  is this stretch of road closed? Far  too many times. It is the smart thing  to do so DO IT.

Just make sure they are planted far  enough away from the road to prevent  drifting on the road.

Long 0verdue. Has both economic and  safety benefits

Look what the trees have done on the  Ripley road south of hwy. 9 now versus  35 years ago.  Bob Percival

seems like a no brainer to me

Something better than nothing the  road reconstruction did nothing.  Should have spent the bucks & raised  the road.

Something has to be done. Everytime  the wind blows the highway is closed.  What did they do in the old days? They  put up snow fences.

Surely the number of closures along this stretch would be enough to justify some sort of action!

That should be an option for all open  areas where the snow blows across the  fields in all townships.

The highway is the main north/south route in this area. If someone needs to get to the Owen Sound Hospital in an emergency the road has to be open. Workers going to Bruce Power should be able to get there without risking their lives. It won't get better till something is done. Hire students to do the planting.

The MTO is responsible for Highway 21  and it's the mostclosed road in  Ontario so the ministry should do  whatever it takes to make that road  safer and keep it open in the winter  time. Otherwise it makes us rural  residents into secondclass citizens  in this province!

The sooner the better. Road is closed  too ofter.

There used to be snow fence used but that has gone by the wayside like so many other useful things in life! Nothing to lose by planting the cedars!

They should be planted from Southampton  to south of Goderich.

They should never haqve taken them out  in the first place

They should provide a decent incentive  for the landowners along the highway  who would lose several feet of land  from the road allowance to their  propterty line and get it done. It's never too late and the economic  benefits and safety benefits would be  huge as the road could remain open and  commuters could get to where they need  to go.

This is only a start should be all  the way to Goderich!!!! STOP digging  the ditches so dam deep!!! And build  up the road up to 5' higher. Stop  wasting OUR MONEY! Fire the pepole  that are working on it now... Wayne Couture

This is the most frequently closed  section of road in the province.  Trees would break the wind and help  keep our roads passable. We have many  days of high winds along Lake  Huron...that is why companies want to  install industrial wind turbines in  this area!

This should have been done years  ago.

trees won't cut it raising the road  bed up a metre or more would be more  helpful in reducing road closures.

Used to be like that years ago then all  the trees were removed but now they are  slowly slowly being replaced. Bruce  Power has been planting spruce trees  successfully for the last few years but  needs better land owner participation  along #21. EEW

we need something done along this highway it is constantly closed and we are missing work we are all adults let us use are own discretion on whether it is safe to drive on unless you care to help us with our bills because of missed work days

We pay our taxes; why should we have  to put up with closed roads for  extended periods when there is a way  to control the whiteouts and drifts?

what's to decide???

Yes and along all snow blownhighways.  Tripple rows of spruce might be more  effective than cedars. Hwy 21 has been  shut down a lot this winter. A living  snow barrier would improve commerce  saftey and community mobility. Why has  this not been done 100 years ago????

yes Big ones

Yes but don't expect it to help any time soon. This has already been done along the BLine and it will be a long time before they will be large enough to help. I call them Charlie Brown Christmas Trees.

yes yes and yes

YES...it is a moral  responsibility...isn't it them who  decided the poor landscape of hwy 21  to begin with?
