Time to choose

When it comes to the debate for wind turbines in our community, I believe we each have to choose sides and end this monstrosity. Let’s get straight to the kitchen table facts and not let any of the corporate mumbo-jumbo or environmental lobbyist distortions get in the way.

On one hand, we live in a thriving nuclear industry community that produces sustainable jobs which put food on our tables and roofs over our heads. Think of all the businesses in the surrounding area that survive and thrive because of Bruce Power.

It also produces low-cost, safe, clean energy. We could go on about the community benefits from Bruce Power but we're sticking to the unemotional facts for both sides.

On the other hand, we have wind farms that produce temporary work, usually contracted out to employees who don’t live in the area, devalue the price of the homes and land of friends, families and community residents.

I won’t get into the costs to the Ontario taxpayer to subsidize these eyesores but the most astounding factor is we are finding out that these oversized fans are making some of our local residents sick!

But I digress; let’s not get into the emotional facts.

The upside to these oversized bathroom fans, is some of our local residents were sold on the fact they could make a quick buck (some of the rumblings from a few of our windmill profiteers is maybe there isn’t as much coin at the end of the rainbow as first promised).

But my favourite argument for these silly lawn toys is……WE ARE SAVING THE PLANET! Talk about tugging on the emotional heart strings!

Listen, I’m all about doing my part to help the environment. I take back my empty beer bottles every week. I make sure to recycle my Delissio Pizza boxes every Wednesday, use my cloth grocery bags and I send in my $25 membership fee to the World Wildlife Foundation every year to help save Flipper off the coast of Japan before he becomes sushi.

But enough is enough! I believe our community is being taken advantage of by politicians and windmill executives who don’t even live in our wonderful piece of the world. And speaking directly to our mayor and councillors, it’s time for you to declare which side you’re on and stick to your guns. You know what the overwhelming feeling of this community is.

I encourage everyone to look into the facts from both sides and make an informed decision. But the time is now to let our elected leaders on every level know where you stand. Because even with all the fans in the world off the coast of Bruce County, it will never cover up the stench of hypocrisy and outright fraud that is being shoved down the throats of the great people in our community and province in the name of saving the planet.
