Grant Robertson (R) and his daughter, Rachel, of Paisley, are seen operating their booth at the Kincardine Farmers' Market last year

Grant Robertson is trying to show people that poverty is not just a big city problem.

The Paisley farmer and his wife, Sarah Slater, and their three children will be taking the Do the Math Challenge during the March Break, to show just how difficult it is to live off a food bank hamper.

Robertson says he and his wife wanted the family to do the challenge so they could understand the hardships others are going through. He says they have been talking to a few people who are currently going through the challenge, so they could get an understanding of how they would feel.

"Well, from talking to other folks who have been doing the challenge, we're expecting to be grumpy, that we'll be lethargic and hungry," says Robertson. "The food we'll be eating is not very high in nutritional value and not particularly high in quality. We expect it will have an immediate impact on our relationships with each other and with food in the long run."

The challenge is part of the Put Food in the Budget campaign which focuses on increasing social assistance budgets so people can afford proper food and shelter. Dependency on food banks is growing and almost 40 per cent of those served by Ontario food banks are children.
