Saugeen Shores Town Council Chambers and The Plex [building housing the Chambers] were filled to capacity on Monday night for the anticipated deputation regarding wind turbine installations. Since the issue has divided the community, a police presence was also in attendance. Charles Edey, President of Leader Resources Services Corp., a leading wind turbine company with offices in Kincardine, asked that a recent motion put before Saugeen Shores Town Council by Deputy Mayor, Luke Charbonneau, be struck down. Charles Edey In his deputation, Edey said Charbonneau's resolution, if passed, would "...remove the opportunity to engage in meaningful consultation and may remove [the] ability to have discussion and provide information to the municipality and community." The introduction of the Green Energy Act (GEA) by the Ontario Provincial Government effectively removed municipalities' decision making process when it comes to wind turbine installations. According to John Wilkinson, Minister of the Environment, at a recent meeting of Mayors, the Green Energy Act supersedes municipal approval. |
Charbonneau, standing by his motion, said at Monday night's meeting that his motion deals with the Province's GEA regulation and that it does not satisfy the public consultation and approval process. The motion was voted on and carried by Council, at which those in the chambers broke into applause.
