Approximately 400 Shriners from the Mocha Shriners temple and their families are coming to Saugeen Shores in May from as far away as Windsor, Elliot Lake and Sault Ste. Marie. The occasion is the Spring Ceremonial that will be held May 27 and 28. This year's new Potentate, the Illustrious Sir Jack Cumming, chose Saugeen Shores to host the event because of its " ... central location, amenities, size and friendly atmosphere." According to the Chamber of Commerce, 150 rooms have been reserved to date.
The Ceremonial, which inducts new members into the Shriners, begins Friday night with a Fish Fry and dance at the Southampton Coliseum followed by official ceremonies on Saturday at The Plex in Port Elgin, where all the units will be making their official donations to charitable causes primarily related to children. Last year, the organization donated over one million dollars. In Bruce County, the Shriners raise money through a wide variety of events that include selling Christmas cakes, onions and by collecting pop cans, which are sold at 65 cents/lb The public are welcome to come out to the events. A special luncheon will also be held Saturday for the Shriner ladies at the Port Elgin Legion followed by a huge parade that will begin at Green and Goderich Streets in Port Elgin.
Jack Cumming, 2011 Shriner Potentate at Saugeen Shores Town Council meeting According to Cumming, people see Shriners in a variety of ways. 'Shriners are the men who have the parades and drive the little cars.' Someone else might think of the Shriners' circuses and clowns. Still another may say, 'Shriners are the men who wear those unique red hats. And another person may remember a child they knew who received care at Shriners Hospitals for Children. And who would be right? All of those people." |
Shriners International began in 1872 founded on the Masonic principles ... brotherly love, relief and truth with fund and fellowship thrown in. Today, there are 193 chapters/temples with over 300,000 men worldwide.
The Shriners Hospitals for Children was established as a one-of-a-kind international health care system that has helped more than 865,000 children. All Shriners' funds raised go to support children's programs and projects. Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
