Mayors for Meals Day is an annual national campaign in the US, held in March every year.  This campaign is designed to increase public awareness, recruit new volunteers and increase funding for Meals on Wheels organizations.  Home and Community Support Services of Grey Bruce hopes to raise awareness and show the value of the hot meal program to the seniors in our community by participating in the campaign.

Last year, 48 Mayors from across Ontario showed their support for the Meals on Wheels program in their town or city by participating in the delivery of meals to seniors.  This year participation in planned throughout Canada.

Saugeen Shores Mayor, Mike Smith, will join volunteer Meryl Cramp on the delivery route to distribute meals in Port Elgin.  The meals are prepared by the Saugeen Memorial Hospital, with the noon meal being available and delivered by volunteers Monday through Friday.

The Ontario Community Support Association represents the needs and issues of Meals on Wheels providers like Home and Community Support Services, and hold the licensing rights for Meals on Wheels in Canada.

 Additional Meals on Wheels Facts:

This year volunteers of Home and Community Support Services will deliver approximately 19,000 hot meals in 10 communities across Grey and Bruce Counties.  There are approximately 70 registered volunteers who assist with the Meals on Wheels service delivery in the Port Elgin area.  The need for a hot meal program in Port Elgin was identified by church groups in 1978 and the first delivery was made in January of 1979, using Cedar Brook Lodge as the meal provider.  It is the continued commitment from our volunteers that makes the Meals on Wheel program a success.

For individuals who live outside of the areas where hot meals are available, volunteers deliver prepackaged frozen meals which are pre-ordered by the individual on a monthly basis.
