Majestic Elm to be eradicated in the name of 'road improvements' As far as errant vehicles leaving the highway and hitting the tree they should first worry about all the vertical concrete bridge walls in Huron that remain unprotected with guard rail or some kind of impact protection. I can think of two deaths related to people colliding with this immovable concrete in the last several years. All they would need is some guardrail protection or deflection measures installed to save lives. They are all so blind to real life it's pathetic that they are paid by us to do a such poor job. Also ask them if there were more trees left along our highways in Huron, if we would be having the whiteout problems we have every time the wind blows. The whiteouts in open country kill and injure many more than that tree ever will. Solution? Bury a piece of drainage tile outside the drip line
of the tree into the farmer's field. Simply go around the tree. That
will still allow the water to drain along the highway and not affect
the farmer's activities.
As far as the trees creating ice on the road we should talk to the government and ask them why they do not cut down all the trees nearing the roads' edge in our National parks. A few branches could be trimmed and the tree trained to grow up and over the highways height restrictions. Many of our overpasses are adequate using 4.0 metres of clearance so why not the tree branches? It just takes a little practical thought. Ask the politician defending the decision to cut the tree down if they would think differently if the tree was at the end of their driveway. Endeavour to persevere. David Bishop |
