To the Editor: I have been following with interest the articles regarding the giant elm trees along Highway 4 in Bruce and Huron Counties. As a regular user of this highway, I cannot believe that the province is even considering cutting these ancient giants down. What are they thinking ... or not? This highway has some of the most significant 'accidents-waiting-to-happen' areas that I have ever travelled ... but the trees are not one of them. They are, in fact, one of the only picturesque sights on the entire landscape. There are pot-holes the size of a car; there are passing lanes that instantly cut-off; there are lights on a curved highway with no warning; the extension of the highway to Bruce Road 20 is absolutely atrocious, especially in winter and this road is heavily travelled by Bruce Power workers; in Clinton the highway at the west end swerves immediately to the right but appears to go straight ahead - but with no markers whatsoever ... and the list goes on. It would appear that 'someone' has put a 'bug in the ear' of the Ministry of Transport/highways about these magnificent trees. In this day and age of supposed "Green energy" and environmental concerns, what on earth is this government thinking to even consider cutting down these few [and rare] trees!!
