It was a battle to the end, as the Kincardine District Secondary School students took on the staff in a hockey game Wednesday afternoon at the Davidson Centre.

The students lit up the scoreboard quickly with two goals early in the first period, before the teachers made it a 2-1 game.

Minutes into the second frame, it was 3-2 for the students.

Teacher Keith Colley "had words" with referee (and school constable) Murray Woodman, who had waved off two goals by the teachers' team, that the officiating seemed a bit one-sided.

Woodman paid no attention and there was grumbling along the teachers' bench that they should have shared their Timbits with the fine constable prior to the game.

The students were ahead, 4-2, when teacher Steve O'Neil was shoved into the students' net, allowing him a penalty shot. Goalie Ashton Wilken stopped the shot and O'Neil's teammates jokingly called him "No Neil".

Goals were scored fast and furious during the end-to-end action in the third period. It was 7-5 for the students early in the period, and minutes later, the teachers had come within a goal, and the score was 7-6.

In the last minute of play, the students scored, followed by an empty-netter by the students, making it 9-6.

Then, with 10 seconds remaining, teacher Bryan Derksen scored, to end the game at 9-7.

Both teams shook hands at the end of the match, and it was back to class.

The students were coached by Josh Howald, and the goals were scored by Tyler Dinsmore (hat-trick), Chris Beattie (two), Jacob Siekierski (two) Jenna Rees, and Derrick Bernath. The rest of the students' team included: Cosette French, David McFarlan, Jason McDonnell, Aidan Calcutt, Hayley Stewart, Jessica Satosek, Dallas Perkins, Carly Schmidt, Mikhayla Bowes and Matt Osadca. Goalies were Ashton Wilken and Meghan McDonald.

The teachers were coached by David Schell, and the goals were scored by Tim Luinstra (two), Jim Vogan, Andy Ferguson, Dan Ogilvie, Keith Colley and Bryan Derksen. The rest of the teachers' team included: Jim Taylor, Rob Kobielski, Peter Wolfe, Vince Yenssen, Kathie Hackney, Steve O'Neil, and Rob Gleeson. Goalie was Zac Ruxton.
