You see them in the hospital, wearing smocks and nametags, smiling and
friendly, always looking to lend a hand. Who are these courteous folks?
They are hospital volunteers and the volunteer programs being run out of the South Grey Bruce Health Centre (SBGHC), which encompasses Chesley, Durham, Kincardine and Walkerton, (also known as “home base”) are in need of volunteers. “I’ve been on board for a year and a half now and even though the (volunteer) program is still in its infancy stages, it is evolving rapidly”, says Nancy Dupuis, Co-ordinator of Volunteers for South Bruce Grey Health Centre. Dupuis also organizes co-op opportunities for high school students, assist with MedQuest , 'Bring Your Kids to Work Day' and liaisons with other volunteer programs within the hospital(s), such as the Auxiliaries (Gift Shop) and the Ontario Breast Screening Program. “It helps them to promote their volunteer program, activities and fundraising events” says Dupuis. "These valued and appreciated volunteers enhance and support the staff and hospital to make it a better place and assist in providing 'quality customer service' to the community we serve”, says Dupuis. 'Volunteers can be found in virtually every department of the hospital helping in some form or fashion --- there is no such thing as a task too small or unappreciated." There are many tasks at the hospital(s) that their volunteers do, such as porter (escort) patients and visitors, assist in Health Records with the purging old patient charts, help in the Emergency department & much more .They come to the hospital for volunteer opportunities, want to explore the medical health field, get exposure, gain experience or contribute to their community and enter the workforce for the first time or re-enter the workforce after long periods of time. “The hospital has many committed volunteers, but need more coverage in every department," says Dupuis. In April of every year, this year running from April 10th – 16th is National Volunteer Week when volunteers around the world are recognized for their commitment and contributions. The volunteers wait until summer however, to celebrate so that they can have a buffet and outdoor BBQ. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers for their dedication and hard work. I look forward to many continued years of working together. Quality care is our mission/vision and we are able to do that because of you! Thank you from all of us at SBGHC," says Dupuis What is required to become a volunteer? After an initial info/interview session, a prerequisite to being a volunteer is to have a two-step TB test done and a current Police Check along with attending a mandatory volunteer orientation. Other than that, all that's needed is enthusiasm, initiative, commitment and a smile. For contact and/or information on volunteering, contact Nancy Dupuis at (519)363-9433 or by e-mail: ndupuis@sbghc.on.ca . |
