“In Music Festivals, the object is not to gain a prize, nor defeat a
rival, but to pace one another on the road to excellence”, said Sir H. Walford Davies
and this powerful statement sets the tone for the goal of
the 30th Anniversary of the Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival
that will be held in Walkerton April 18th to the 30th.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Walkerton and, with the co-operation from Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA), the festival brings in nearly 3,000 – 4,000 students & adults, not including the many supportive parents, grandparents and other family members who attend this exciting festival. The cost of entry into any of the events varies from $8.00 for a single performer up to $25.00 for choirs and bands. There are several categories of participation including Vocals, Piano, Organ, Accordion, Strings & Woodwind, plus Percussion, Recorder, Dance, Bands and, the newest edition, Yodelling. “The main reason (we hold this event) is to help children in their musical endeavors”, says Dorothy Hazlehurst, Executive Secretary and Registrar. Festival sites this year will be the Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s United Church, Knox Presbyterian Church, Walkerton Pentecostal Church, Knights of Columbus Hall, Walkerton District High School and historical Diamond Jubilee Hall. The Highlight Concert will be held on April 30th at 7:30 p.m. at Walkerton District Secondary School (WDSS) and will feature students who have one scholarship and who have been hand-picked by the Adjudicators, “It’s awesome! You can’t believe the talent of the kids in this area”, says Hazleton. Entry fee in the past has been $5.00 at the door. As with plenty of other organizations, this festival relies heavily on volunteers from the community to ensure tasks, such as ticket selling, checking in contestants, making sure no one enters during the performance and keeping noise levels down are carried out efficiently. “They are a key part of our organization”, says Hazlehurst. The events will be held daily from 9:00am – 10:00pm, Monday through Friday, with entry at the door of $2.00 per event. The 30th Anniversary Program 2011 Guide can also be purchased at Holst Office Supplies in Walkerton or by calling Dorothy Hazlehurst at (519)881-0415 for $10.00 For more information on the Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival, contact Dorothy Hazlehurst at (519)881-0415 or pick up a 30th Anniversary Guide 2011 at Holst today! |
