Several groups gathered Monday (March 21) for the Grey Bruce Crystal Meth Task Force launch of the Meth Watch program in Chesley. Members of local media, The Grey Bruce Health Unit, OPP and various social organizations discussed the use of crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth) in Grey Bruce. Statistics indicate that the average number of people across Ontario accessing addiction services, is about 1.4 per cent, but in Grey and Bruce counties, it's more like nine per cent. Stratford mayor Dan Mathieson explained Perth County's experience with crystal meth. The county was named "meth capital of Ontario" in 2005. Since then, it has created programs to help reduce the use of crystal meth in the community. Hanover mayor Kathi Maskell spoke about her concern for Bruce and Grey. The Meth Watch program is a community partnership. The goal is to limit the theft and suspicious sale of products used in the illegal manufacturing of meth. Pharmacies, retailers, farm associates, police and concerned residents are called on to become active members in the Meth Watch program. For more information check out methwatch.ca
