Stuart James Burgess of Lion's Head is the featured artist at the Victoria Park Gallery in Kincardine, for the month of April. The Scottish-born Canadian has lived for the past 20 years on the Bruce Peninsula. "As a person who lived a large portion of my life in a big city, I am inspired now by the impressive natural environment that surrounds me," says Burgess. "This environment supports wildlife, such as the bears, coyotes, ravens, and snakes that have worked their way into my images." Concerned about the toxicity that can be inherent in many art media, Burgess has tried to use non-toxic materials wherever possible. "The prints that I make are called 'reduction linoprints' and the process involves the progressive carving of linoleum (recycled and non-toxic) and the progressive application of coloured inks (water-based)," he says. "They are created on coloured paper using pencils that are primarily pigment in a wax base," says Burgess. "The human form appears in much of these works, and although they are enigmatic, a kind of dialogue evolves between the disparate elements as the work progresses. My hope is that the imagery that is depicted, and the surface quality of the work (the colour, the texture, etc.) work together successfully to encourage some kind of interpretation in the viewer." The Victoria Park Gallery and Gift Shop is a non-profit incorporation established in 2001 by a small group of enthusiastic artists. It is located in the Kincardine Arts Centre, former Kincardine Town Hall, at 707A Queen St. Over the past several months, the art gallery has been refurbished along with the restoration of the arts centre building, and will host a grand re-opening on May 14. Currently, it is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the gallery, visit www.vpgallerykincardine.com, E-mail: victoriaparkgallery@hotmail.com; or call 519-396-6699.
