The Walkerton and Owen Sound jails have taken a huge hit with the provincial budget announcement. Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch says there were a few things he would change about the budget and that would include the jails. "I wouldn't have closed our jails in Owen Sound and Walkerton and transport prisoners all the way to Penetang and Toronto," he says. "And then, when they have to come back to court with the brand new courthouse in Owen Sound, you have to transport them all the way back up again. It doesn't make sense to do things like that." Murdoch says the jails are out-of-date but it's a waste of money to be transporting inmates to their court dates in this area from large city jails. "They did a lot of work on the Walkerton jail, but not so much at Owen Sound," he says. "At Walkerton, they modernized it a little bit, but it's still an old jail. But I think somebody at the (Ontario) Ministry of Correctional Services wanted to get rid of our two jails - centralize it all in Penetang or Toronto. The main reason is, they don't want to be bothered with them."

He says the cost won't matter to them. "It's going to
cost a lot more to transfer prisoners back and forth. There's a better chance of
accidents, and you're going to have criminals running through all these areas
to get them back and forth. Why build a new courthouse in Owen Sound
if you're not going to keep a jail there?"
Ontario finance minister Dwight Duncan said in his budget speech the province was closing under-utilized jails. Scrolling stops when you move your mouse inside the scroll area. You can click on the ads for more
