There's something about April Fool's Day that makes it the perfect night for the Kincardine Theatre Guild's Medieval Feast. Held Friday night in the Kincardine Hall at the Davidson Centre, it was a great feast, with delicious food and lots of fun and folly. Written by John F. Adams, who played the lead role of King James, the tale begins with "Harold the Herald" played by Jim Peddie, welcoming the clans to the feast in honour of the homecoming of their king. The king had been gone many months and his people thought he had perished, but he has returned and they are celebrating. Joining King James at the head table were Queen Morgana played by Sonya Holt, the Captain of the Guard played by Matt Horst, and the queen's Lady in Waiting Sluiceme Loofa played by Elaine Van Rooyen. Cavorting through the crowd were Chester the Jester played by Matt Harvey, and Iggy the Jailer played by Doug Pellett, as well as numerous Knights, Servers and Wenches. As the king is about to tell the tale of how he managed to get back to his clansmen, enter Andy Hill as Sir Formonth Dolt who claims to be the real King James because he has the royal scepter and sword. So begins the real hilarity as the crowd and those closest to to the king turn on Adams (King James) and he cries out that they are a fickle bunch! After several contests, involving routines very similar to the television show, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", neither Queen Morgana nor the clans and countrymen can truthfully say which man is the real King James. In the midst of all of this confusion, various members of the audience have been thrown in jail for a multitude of sins, and then bailed out, including two Norsemen played by Jim McArthur and Andy Leyden.
Doug Pellett as Iggy the Jailer (L) locks up Amanda Farrell Dixon, Shari Roberts, and the Norsemen,Jim McArthur and Andy Leyden Sean Walsh was charged for pinching a lady's bottom for which he was fined. Then Eddie Daniels came forward, saying he was the real King James, and was promptly thrown in jail. The tension mounts as King James (Adams) is seized and about to be thrown in the dungeon, when the real story comes out about "Love's Crescent Moon," a secret only the real King James would know. Formonth is revealed as the Dolt he is, and it is discovered that Sluiceme Loofa, the Lady in Waiting, is in on the scam. Both are dragged away to be executed. However, Morgana asks the king to put them in jail instead. If they can raise the fine of 500 shillings, they will be released and sent to live at "D'nae Gothere". It's up to the audience to raise the money, and the funds are found so the criminals are sent away. King James and Queen Morgana bid everyone goodnight and the tale ends. were several great ad-libs by
audience members and Adams, as well as a couple of power outages which
added to the magnificent fun of the Medieval Feast.
While the food was good, there were no utensils so the participants ate with their hands.
