In the month of March in 2009, 867,948 people across the country went to a food bank, according to Food Banks Canada. Children represented 38 per cent of this number.

In March of 2010, 73,000 more people needed help feeding themselves or their families than the same month the year before, an alarming number reaching nearly 941,000 people across Canada.

myFM, Sobeys, Meridian, Trillium Court Seniors Community, Pierson Chevrolet, Nancy Ackert Financial Solutions and the Kincardine Times are joining forces to provide food for those who need help making ends meet.

A food drive will be held during the Easter weekend, April 21-24, at Sobeys in Kincardine, with the goal of filling a truck with non-perishable food. Cash donations will also be graciously accepted to purchase needed items.

Working with the Kincardine Food Bank, the food will be distributed to those families in our area who may be struggling to afford a good meal this Easter holiday season.

myFM will be broadcasting live all weekend at the event. "We know we can count on the continued generosity of our community in being a ‘lighthouse of hope’ in the midst of suffering," says myFM general manager Rob Mise.

"The generosity of the community is greatly appreciated," says Nancy Dawson of the Kincardine Food Bank. "In 2010, we saw a 20-per-cent increase in need, over the previous year, in our area.”
