Saoirse Cameron is hoping to compile 500 signatures by the end of April to take to Kincardine council in support of improvements to the municipal recycling program.

The manager of Bean's Bistro has a petition at the coffee shop in downtown Kincardine and is urging everyone to sign it as a show of support to take this issue to council.

"At Bean's Bistro, we strive to provide the customer with high-quality products above and beyond our high-quality beverages and food," says Cameron.

"Our hot beverage take-out cups are double-lined so that you have less waste per cup since you have no need for additional sleeves and they are recyclable. Our cold plastic take-out cups, lids and straws are all compostable."

The shop also provides its customers with paper take-out boxes instead of Styrofoam because they are made from recycled material and are more easily broken down in landfills. And the napkins are made from recycled material.

"We do all of this because part of our mantra at Bean's Bistro is to be green and clean and good to the environment," says Cameron. "It's why we insist on organic farming practices and why we support the co-operatives that are certified organic."

The problem in Kincardine, she says, is the municipality is lacking the facilities and programs to adequately dispose of all the recyclable and compostable products. So, all this excess waste is ending up in the garbage and filling up the landfills.

"In other municipalities, all things paper, plastic and metal are recyclable, and they have compostable green bins which are picked up weekly," says Cameron. "In these green bins, you can put food scraps but also things like tissues. Think of how much we could reduce our garbage production and how much we could save on bag tags."

She urges everyone to sign the petition so Kincardine can reduce garbage and increase the amount of waste that is being recycled.
