A deputation was made to Saugeen Shores Town Council on Monday, April 11 to have the charity event, Cruisers night re-located from bottom of High Street in Southampton.

The short presentation made by Wendy Putnam of Southampton was a follow-up to a letter dated April 7 sent to the Mayor and Councilors.  In the letter, signed by Putnam on behalf of Helen Reeve, reasons for the request set out in the letter included: trespassing, litter, noise, pollution, disruption of traffic including cyclists, restricted access to residents and guests disrespectful attitude of participants toward residents, abuse of a vacant lot, barricades used to cordon off the street and general disruption.

The letter also included the town By-law that sets out the rules and regulations regarding, the majority of which take affect at 9:00 p.m. at night, with the exception of amplified music which is prohibited at all times.

The letter's author also suggested possible alternatives, such as The Plex in Port Elgin, the Port Elgin Beach, between Grosvenor and Albert Streets in Southampton (one block from its present location) or between Albert and Victoria Streets (two blocks from its present location) or at the Museum.

Mayor Smith explained to Putnam that the annual application [for Cruisers 2011] had not yet come before Council for approval.

Clerk Linda White said that the letter had been received as required in January.  "Normally, it is a simple formality that staff deals with unless there is a situation where it must be brought before Council, so that will happen now that an opposition has been registered."

Cruisers' Night in Southampton takes place every Thursday night during the summer months beginning after May 24th weekend.  It runs from approximately 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is weather dependent.

For over 15 years, car collectors have brought their prized automobiles out for the public to view and, as a fundraiser, the event has raised over $167,000 for the local Southampton Memorial Hospital.

The matter will now be brought forward to Council for a decision.
