According to those who have suffered a stroke, little is in place to help them through in the aftermath. Chair, Jill Harris, said that the Grey Bruce Stroke Survivors was formed last summer to help not only stroke survivors but also their families and caregivers. "Getting out with others who have experienced the same thing helps survivors realize that they are not alone in the challenges that they face." According to Harris, the incidents of suicide is very high among those who suffer from strokes. "Strokes are not limited to the elderly as some people may think," Harris pointed out. "There have been children who have had strokes, certainly the middle aged and, of course, the elderly." Harris also says that there is no direct financial help available for most stroke survivors and there are so many things that are needed, from wheelchairs, to braces and safety changes in the home. "We are trying to established a benevolent fund," says Harris, "so that when help is needed, we can provide it. The group recently held a 'rock n roll-a-thon' at Heritage Mall in Owen Sound on April 9th to raise funds through pledges and donations. Kewaquom raised more that $200 in pledges and the group is looking at holding other events in the near future. Harris also explained that the group provides information and recreation for those who attend their meetings. "Many people who suffer from a stroke do not like to leave their homes," she says, "but the longer they stay in, the harder it is for them to go out." The not-for-profit group is a chapter of The March of Dimes-Stroke Recovery and meets at the Owen Sound Legion at 1450-2nd Ave. West every second Wednesday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information call 1-800-263-3465 ext. 7736. |
