The excitement builds as Saugeen District Secondary School’s Me-to-We
group prepares to transform their shameless idealism into something very
real. On Tuesday, April 19th, Saugeen District will be hosting an afternoon-long event mirroring the Toronto We-Day event hosted by Free the Children founders Marc and Craig Kielburger. ‘SDSS We Day,’ will feature keynote speaker Michel Chikwanine, a former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is now a passionate speaker for 'Free the Children' and travels North America to spread the Me-to-We movement. The day will also showcase local bands with a message and community volunteers who are passionate about spreading the Me-to-We philosophy and making a difference. The afternoon event is dedicated to all SDSS students, but there will also be a repeat performance that evening for the community at 7pm. For only a $5 entrance fee, everyone is invited to attend and listen to Michel deliver a powerful presentation on his experience as a child soldier and how it motivated him to become a life-long social activist. Luke Maybury, co-President of the high school group, is clearly enthusiastic about the event. “I feel that as a group it will be awesome to showcase both the hard work of our team and the community. I can't wait to acknowledge the support we’ve received and to hear Michel tell us about the ways we can impact the world around us!” Thus far, the group has raised approximately $6000 this year alone to achieve the overall goal of $8500 to build a school in Sierra Leone, Africa. Tickets for evening event are available at the SDSS main office or Lakeshore Recreation front desk, both will be accepting only cheques made payable to SDSS. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Please contact teacher advisor Alyssa Dunlop at 519-832-2091 ext. 573 regarding any questions about this exciting event. The SDSS Me-to-We group would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their major sponsors: Bruce Power, Saugeen Youth Coalition and the Student Advisory Council of SDSS. This event would not be possible without their generous support.
