To the Editor:

On Monday evening of this week, my mother (Helen Reeve) and sister (Wendy Putnam) attended a Town Council meeting to respectfully request that Council consider relocation of cruisers night.  At no time have we asked it to be cancelled, we absolutely would not do that.  We respect that Cruiser's night supports the Southampton Hospital, a Hospital that I have been a patient of over the years.

Gary mentioned in his interview the respect he has for local hospitals and he and I are in absolute agreement on this point.  I would have been at the Council meeting personally on Monday, but my 24 year old son is going through chemotherapy as we was diagnosed with cancer at the end of January.  We feel fortunate for the care he has received and the fact that he will have a full recovery.

My sister and my mother were simply speaking on my behalf and they too are completely supportive of fundraising efforts for our local hospital.  My son Jake has put together a team for Relay for Life for Saugeen Shores,  which is being held in Port Elgin on July 8th and he has raised $8,000 personally and his team collectively has raised $12,000 so we too, support fundraising efforts for good causes.   Over the years we have participated in the Shore Run and many other local fundraising initiatives.

One of your readers suggested that whoever raised this request should go back where we came from and I was saddened and hurt to see that point.  My family purchased our house in 1957 in Southampton and my grandmother was new to the town at that time, but the wonderful people of Southampton welcomed us and made it home.  Many have been around for far more generations than my family.   Southampton is a place of warmth and welcome exudes from the residents so I wanted to ensure my neighbours, who are relatively new to town were not accused of initiating this request We welcome newcomers who have fallen in love with this town and the people.  As far as going back where I came from, Southampton is home.

We never thought that moving the location would impact the fundraising. My brother is a car buff and it wouldn't matter to him if cruisers night was at the base of High street, the plex, uptown or anywhere else for that matter.  To see an old car, he would drive, walk or cycle.   I am not an expert in this area, however, any car show I have seen has been in a commercially zoned area, much like the car show during Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin, located near the stores in the downtown core to draw people to the merchants.    Our home is located in a residential area and we have only asked that the town consider a relocation to a commercially zoned area.

I personally love watching the families stroll to the beach, ice cream cone in hand to watch the sunset.  I welcome participating in the fireworks on July 1st when the street is blocked off.   When the town celebrated the 150th, they came and respectfully asked us for support, and of course we said yes!   The family atmosphere of this little town is the absolute best and I hope it stays forever.

Please, I do not wish to launch in to a fight.  The only fight worthwhile is the one my son is going through and the one that Gary's mom is going through.  All I have asked for is consideration to relocate.

With warmest regards,
Mary Putnam
