Without warning, orders have come out of Owen Sound for two rural hospitals, Southampton and Meaford, to discontinue providing hot 'meals on wheels' effective at the end of May.

For some, seniors in particular, it will mean the loss of the only daily hot meal that they have.  The program, which was started at Southampton hospital more than 20 years ago, is primarily volunteer driven.

The program is mostly self-sustaining in that recipients pay a daily fee for the trays of hot food that are then delivered to their homes by volunteers.

Many of the recipients have medical conditions that require special dietary needs and, therefore, the hospital kitchen staff has been able to carefully monitor the meals that are prepared.

According to sources, this will be a "devastating blow to some of the people who do not drive and, for most, it will mean the end of the one nutritious daily meal they receive, unless a replacement provider is found."
