Steve Black (L) and John Elkerton of State Industrial Products of London, install an Ecolution system at the Kincardine Fire Hall

A new chemical cleaning system has been installed at the Kincardine Fire Hall with a view of saving money and protecting the environment.

Distributed by State Industrial Products of London, the Ecolution system provides concentrated solution which is mixed with water automatically so there is no guesswork about the correct ratio of chemical to water.

Territory manager John Elkerton says the system mixes proper solutions for cleaning the fire trucks, the gear, the equipment, the floors, everything except the bunker gear which is sent out for cleaning and repairs.

"This is a better product because it works on cold water only," says Elkerton, "so it saves you money. To get our government certification, we have to guarantee that the chemicals are safe around humans and animals."

Regional manager Steve Black says the Ecolution products will meet or beat any tests done by market brand competitors.

"Not only do we have to meet environmental safety standards, we also have to guarantee that the cleaners will do the job," he says.

Grant Robinson who is in charge of maintenance at the Kincardine Fire Hall, says State Industrial Products came out with this Ecolution system three years ago and he has been looking forward to using it.

"We're going to see a huge cost savings with truck cleaner," he says, noting that sometimes the crew just poured in the chemical and added water, without measuring anything. The new system mixes the chemical and water at the press of a button, resulting in the perfect mix every time.

"There are no harmful chemicals used in the products," says Elkerton. "It's all natural. The secret ingredient is lactic acid."

He has done presentations to all departments in the Municipality of Kincardine, now it's up to each department to implement this chemical system, based on its health and safety requirements.

"We installed one of these systems in the Lucknow Arena about a year-and-a-half ago, and they saw a cost savings of 38 per cent," says Elkerton. The system is also being installed at the Tiverton Fire Hall.

Black says the disinfectant kills 99 per cent of all bacteria, using an iodine derivative in a natural base. There are no artificial masking agents, such as perfumes or scents, in the cleaners, he adds.

"Canada is a little behind the United States on this," says Black. "All the schools in the U.S. have environmental cleaning programs."
