About 300 participants raised $44,141 in the 11th annual walk to end Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Sunday morning in Kincardine.

The money goes toward community support services in the Bruce County area for MS sufferers and toward research to find a cure.

It was a celebration as the event surpassed a total of $1-million in fund-raising over the past 11 years.

"We had a great warm-up with Cody Owens of Magnum Fitness before walkers followed the Penetangore Pipe Band and faced the snowy, cold weather in their choice of a two-kilometre, five-kilometre or 10-kilometre walk," said organizer Katrina Smiley.

"We had KDSS student volunteers at our harbour checkpoint, sponsored by Meridian and the Power Workers' Union."

When the participants arrived back at the Davidson Centre, they were welcomed by J.C. and Julie B. of 101.7 The One and entertainment from Brian and Raylene and tunes spun by DJ Ryan Berry of Buzzcuts Studios.

The barbecue was put on by the Kincardine Lions Club, provided by the Bruce Steakhouse, Boston Pizza, Zehrs and Crabby Joe's. There were many walker door prizes that were generously donated by local merchants.

The team prizes went to:

  • Taylor F.O.F. - largest team, prize donated by Nicole McKay, RMT
  • The Barbarians Rugby Team - best dressed, prize donated by Pharmasave
  • The Hair Connection Hotties - best team name, prize donated by Pharmasave
  • Walmart Chicks - most enthusiastic, prize donated by Hair Connection
  • Youngest walker was Kian Kaminski who was born on Dec. 23

"We really appreciate everyone who came out to support the Kincardine MS Walk," said Smiley. "And we would not have had so much success without our fantastic volunteers and our terrific sponsors."
